How do solar panels work? Solar panels contain what are called ‘solar cells’ within them. These solar cells are semiconductors and generate electricity from sunlight that translate to solar savings. The process of solar cells generating electricity is known as the Photovoltaic Effect.
The energy absorbed from the sunlight is in the form of direct current (DC) energy and is then converted into alternating current (AC) energy. The AC energy is then distributed to your property’s electrical panel and can now be used to power your home.
The AC energy that’s being used is strong enough to power your appliances, lights, devices, and more. The only difference is now your energy is renewable, clean and eco-friendly and will be transferred to your solar savings!

Electricity generated in the panels runs to your net meter and powers your building. You’re still connected to the power grid as traditional power companies operate through the grid.
Your solar inverter that’s responsible for converting DC energy into AC energy is typically a small unit placed by your home’s meter. This unit is connected to your solar panel system and will in turn correlate with your meter to ensure Net Metering runs its course smoothly. The energy you don’t use in your home will be sent to the grid and stored for a later time when you need to use that energy. Another positive is that your home will increase in value with solar!
